I promise we’ll get to some actual Things You Are soon. Before that, I just want to spend a little more time thinking about the journey. There’s four stages. But before we get into them, I need to explain the bizarre story of where they came from.
I was having the usual odd dream that you have every now and then. I was about to go on stage as part of the cast of Thundercats – The Musical. Of course I was. One of the other cast members, a good friend apparently, although I don’t know who it was meant to be in real life, panicked and couldn’t go on. At this point I knew that if she could only believe a few core truths about herself, she would have the confidence to go on. I said to her, “You are beautiful, you are loved, you are capable, and you are good.”
I liked this a lot, and I’ve used it a few times. But it was only after deciding to start this site, and starting to think about some of the Things You Are might be, that I realised that, in a way, these four things define the four stages of the journey. They’re kind of like overarching categories for all the other things, and they have a sort of natural progression from inside to out. So I thought that it might help to use that to help frame the rest of the stuff I want to say.
First, You Are Beautiful is not just about what you look like, but is about who you are, completely separately from anyone else or their opinion of you. At this point the aim is to get really comfortable with yourself before you even think of how other people see you and value you, which is next – You Are Loved.
Once you see that you are an amazing human beings, both with inherent value and also valued by people, you can start to think about what you can do. Which brings us to You Are Capable. And finally, secure in who you are and what you can do, you can grow in your contribution to the world and others – You Are Good.
Every other ‘You Are’ statement I’ve got so far send to fit into one of these groups. Of course, life is never linear – you also grow in knowing yourself by helping others, for example, and you don’t have to wait until you’re completely secure in yourself to do this – but I think this structure will help.
I guess if you learn nothing else from this site, I would want you and everyone else in the world to know this: fundamentally, deep within you, you are beautiful, you are loved, you are capable, and you are good. Coming soon – more on each of those, and then some specifics. Feel free to ask questions or leave me a comment.
